Chinese Medicine Practitioner

Derek comes from a family involved in many aspects of medicine, from scientific research, medical device engineering, to medical doctor. From a young age, he has been fascinated by the human body’s ability to recover from illnesses. Growing up in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he was exposed to many home remedies. After moving to the United States at a young age he would listen closely to relatives discussing cases. These experiences solidified his desire to pursue his passion for integrative medicine throughout undergraduate studies at Indiana University School of Medicine and graduate studies at the Academy of Oriental Medicine Austin.

His wellness philosophy is that one’s body is an interconnected system and therefore should be treated as a whole. His treatments focus on giving patients relief while learning the origin of the condition to most effectively address the concern at hand. Derek is passionate about working with his patients towards a better quality of life.

On his spare time, he enjoys dancing West Coast swing and Salsa with his wife Kari. He also plays guitar and the Puerto Rican cuatro when he is not walking his dog, Frodo. Derek has been a hospital healthcare professional in Austin for 8 years and strives to collaborate with other healthcare providers. He is also an Adjunct faculty at Academy of Oriental Medicine Austin and working on a peer-reviewed publication.

Additional Training: Derek graduated from Chengdu TCM Hospital Study Abroad Program and completed the Integrative Medicine Oncology Training Program from Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

No botox or injectables. No harsh chemicals. No lasers.

Our primary focus is to therapeutically treat the skin with a holistic approach that encompasses both internal and external therapies. We provide corrective treatment for premature aging, problems with pigmentation, acne, scarring, and more. Our holistic approach can be used to correct and improve psoriasis, rosacea, eczema and other stubborn skin problems. With over a decade in treating complex skin conditions, you can expect a results-oriented treatment plan that nourishes and corrects the skin’s natural function for optimal results. However, because of our more natural approach, most treatment plans are between 3-12 months in length. During this time we focus on correcting internal imbalances that manifest physically on the skin by promoting the body’s natural healing response. In conjunction, we also use topical therapeutics that correct imperfections by nourishing instead of stripping away at the skin’s natural barrier and protective mechanisms.

Our mission is to provide holistic dermatological treatment using non-invasive, non-injectable therapeutics that address any skin condition without creating unnecessary disruption to the ecosystem of your skin. Each service includes a consultation and is fully tailored to meet your skin needs.

Asian bodywork often referred to as tuina (twee- nah) is a therapeutic bodywork based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medical theory addressing the soft tissues and energetic state. We work along the meridians- channels of energy associated with Chinese medicine and connect to the points along them. In Chinese bodywork, we treat holistically, the whole person’s physical, emotional and spiritual wellness.  Through the process, we use different methods such as pushing, plucking and stimulating the energetics and softening tension.  As a part of tuina, we sometimes employ other tools such as cupping and guasha.

Cupping became popularly seen during the Olympics; the cups provide a suction, or a negative pressure creating some interstitial space and new circulation to the area. The practice is famously recognizable for the red circular marks left on the skin afterward. Primarily this method treats pain and discomfort, however, there are a wide variety of conditions that can be treated with cupping and people feel a tremendous healing effect. Guasha has a similar impact as cupping; however, through means of a therapeutic, gentle scraping. It is used to help promote healing in the area and can also result in some redness or petechiae. No cupping or guasha treatment comes without consent. We understand that not everyone may want red marks at any time.

What to expect with Asian Bodywork therapy:

Asian bodywork therapies differ from western massage in many ways, primarily, the practitioner’s knowledge of the system of Chinese medicine and mechanisms of the body are extensive.  This type of treatment requires clothing; therefore, expect to wear something comfortable and loose fitting. Bodywork is performed taking into account clients’ needs and complete health status, where one person may benefit from more stimulating treatment, another might need more subtle stimuli. When you come in for a treatment, come ready to relax and talk about what you want to address.

Who can benefit from Asian Bodywork therapy?

Anyone! Because the nature of the bodywork is holistic, countless conditions might benefit from treatment. Athletes and people with body pains, chronic or acute, can benefit from treatment and preventative work with Asian bodywork.
