Chinese Medicine Practitioner

Derek comes from a family involved in many aspects of medicine, from scientific research, medical device engineering, to medical doctor. From a young age, he has been fascinated by the human body’s ability to recover from illnesses. Growing up in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he was exposed to many home remedies. After moving to the United States at a young age he would listen closely to relatives discussing cases. These experiences solidified his desire to pursue his passion for integrative medicine throughout undergraduate studies at Indiana University School of Medicine and graduate studies at the Academy of Oriental Medicine Austin.

His wellness philosophy is that one’s body is an interconnected system and therefore should be treated as a whole. His treatments focus on giving patients relief while learning the origin of the condition to most effectively address the concern at hand. Derek is passionate about working with his patients towards a better quality of life.

On his spare time, he enjoys dancing West Coast swing and Salsa with his wife Kari. He also plays guitar and the Puerto Rican cuatro when he is not walking his dog, Frodo. Derek has been a hospital healthcare professional in Austin for 8 years and strives to collaborate with other healthcare providers. He is also an Adjunct faculty at Academy of Oriental Medicine Austin and working on a peer-reviewed publication.

Additional Training: Derek graduated from Chengdu TCM Hospital Study Abroad Program and completed the Integrative Medicine Oncology Training Program from Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
